Bohemian Art Deco Shoot

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As some of you may have noticed, I have been absent for the past couple weeks. I was away on vacation to visit my family in England!

Upon my return, I found out that a photo shoot {that I contributed a cake to} was featured in 100 Layer Cake, YAY! Stephanie Collins and Emily Hegg of Tasteful Tatters were the masterminds behind this beautiful, bohemian shoot. The pair chose a fairly neutral palette with accents of mint, turquoise and gold which gave the shoot a soft but contemporary feel to it.

For the cake, I wanted to keep in modern but pretty enough to be a wedding cake.  The bride’s dress was a huge inspiration for the whole concept of the shoot and I wanted that to be carried through with the design of the cake. The top tier, 3 overlapping triangles with hints of gold; the middle, 2 horizontal lines; the bottom, a gold-painted, diamond stencil design.

The stencil design was a DIY project. I knew that I wanted to have the tribal shapes but I didn’t want to cut out a million tiny pieces of fondant and arrange them in a dysfunctional puzzle. So, I made a stencil. You can find blank sheets of stencil paper in most craft stores. Just trace or draw your design onto the sheet and cut out carefully with an exacto knife. Voila! A custom, unique stencil for a fraction of what you would pay for a premade one and the results are incredible.
